Innovative VR simulations for Naval Industry

The Interactive Digital Center in Galacia, Spain, IDC Galicia develops innovative Virtual Reality training applications for the naval industry and the auxiliary company DETEGASA. The interactive 3D simulation will allow workers to train in the dismounting of a waste incinerator on a war ship. “This project is a collaboration with the shipyard Navantia. It will also include a web simulation that will allow DETEGASA’s customers to order spare parts for some of their equipment from 3D models,” José L. de Nicolás at CIS Galicia says.

IDC Galicia’s focus is primarily on R&D projects and the development of virtual reality applications, in which they are present in the whole process; from analysis development, integration and result dissemination. The Center has successfully conducting virtual reality design and development projects over the last year, including a naval simulator in collaboration with Computer Area of the University of Santiago de Compostela and the High School Crucero Baleares.

The IDC Galicia initiative was born from the Industrial Design office belonging to CIS Galicia, whose main business areas were reverse engineering, numerical calculus, virtual product presentation, training and information dissemination. Later, the local government saw the need to evolve towards the virtual reality based development market targeted towards the naval sector, but without ignoring other sectors.

The installation of the Interactive Digital Center in Galicia, will complete this month with the last VR training hours given by interactive software provider, EON Reality.

Timing is everything. I am now in conversations with NAVAIR (the aeronautical side of the US Navy) to bring 3D Virtual Reality to the technicians and artisans that maintain, repair, and overhaul the US Navy’s fleet of aircraft. With nearly 15,000 people working on the airplanes a new mode of training is required for the new “digital learners” that have grown up playing video games. They are accustomed to interactivity and expect “things” in the real world to be interactive. Currently the training mode for new technicians is all “hands on”. This is Old School.

Let’s pick a number: Say a dummy jet engine for a F18 costs $250,000 (I just made up the price). Only a couple of technicans/artisans can train on this engine at the same time. If we create a 3D Virtual Reality training simulation for removing/replacing the same engine it might cost $100,000 (I made this number up too, but it’s a ballpark guess). Now any number of people can train on this simulation at the same time. And retention of the information goes up significantly because the technicians are interacting with the simulation (and not watching a video or a teacher do the task).

We are approaching an Event Horizon when it comes to teaching and training using 3D Virtual Reality. A paradigm shift in learning is coming. The real question is who will see the benefits first and completely outpace their competition?

    Your thoughts?
